With
5 runs needed... "Sir Charles" (a
name that Jamaicans seem to love regarding him
as) lash fuh 6. West
Indies takes another victory, seals a place
in the Cricket World Cup Super 8 round and takes
a step closer to earning 2pts for leading the
group.
It
is becoming more apparent that the starting
price of $50USD for an ICC Cricket World Cup
(CWC) test match is way above the standard cost
of living of many of the Caribbean islands.
Reports of a Pakistan man offering one of
his kidneys for money to attend the CWC
should be a sure sign, not to mention the fact
that round one games are yet to be sold out.
Or maybe people just can't take a whole day
off to attend a sporting event? Well next week
when de Super 8 start, we shall find out. In
the meantime, television viewer ship is up,
which means that all the profits that have been
realized by large corporate sponsors are pleasing
to both sides.
Speaking
of World Cup tickets, according to The London
Daily Mail on Monday, FIFA's Vice-President
Jack Warner's son, Daryan Warner has allegedly
been fined US$992,652 for scalping tickets
at last year's world cup in Germany. De part
that is most interesting is that he has been
ordered to pay the "secret" fine to
the charity, SOS Children's Villages before
March 22, the next meeting of FIFA's executive.
Nothing
spells 'baw-ball' more dan "new trial".
Finally after all de "who tell who what"
and "who is who partner" we see that
good ole Silver Fox (Panday) has escaped again.
Just be sure to note that is because of all
de corruption surrounding his case that it has
been deemed that he should be re-tried under
a different magistrate... who can disagree?
Ah just observing the movements, dat no sooner
than de ole case get throw out, ole Bas want
to start chatting and even resume his seat in
Parliament, and.... if I may add, threatening
to raise case against any opposition to dat....
in this here election year.
Another
spell of retrials also comes for the banana
industry. As most Caribbean islands were
formally colonized by Europeans we used to have
the privilege being the primary providers of
bananas to the UK and Europe. In a classic example
of "right getting richer," in order
for the World Bank to lend islands in need,
the rules of the loan are never set to help
the borrower. American banana giants such
as Dole and Chiquita whose operations are based
in Central and South America have been trying
to expand their market share for decades now.
Cutting costs by taking advantage of the exchange
rate, coupled with their extremely low wages
and substandard working environment... American
companies are now protesting again that European
importers are not complying with the WTO's 1996
ruling regarding discrimination. Unable to compete
with unnaturally low prices of the Americas...
hundreds of banana plantations across the Caribbean
have had to significantly reduce size and in
many cases close down all together.
