Gentle Peoples -

Never wanting to deliver sad news, but always having to reflect the mind of the Juice and the events of our day. Last week the nation of Trinidad and Tobago mourned the death of the former president of the county, the honorable Noor Hassanali. Passing at the age of 88, he was the second president of Trinidad and Tobago and served thru the changes of many governments between 1987 and 1997. Former president Hassanali wasn't like the politicians of today with stories in every media source daily. He was the kinda man that you used to read about in social studies book, a man who always sought the benefit of his countrymen before all. Being a devout Muslim and indo-Trinidadian was never a platform as he served for the benefit of our citizens. What an example...

So it's a big week.

Trinbagoians will be celebrating we 44th year of independence. Now, every year on de 31st they does give out a "Trinity Cross," but this year. Why? Cause one, it ain't have no Trinity Cross no more, doh mind they de appointed committee ent come up with de new name yet; and two, de other committee ent find nobody who deserve it. We ent know, wasn't too bad a year... was it? What happen to Stephen Ames or Dwighty? We ent know what de factors are, and they still have a day or two... so we ga see.

Over de pond in London de Notting Hill Carnival going on since Monday big wit over 300,000 strong on de streets... plenty full costume and ting. It ent no Trini Carnival, but we glad that they doing a little something to pass de time till February. London Trinis and islanders from over 18 countries doing dis ting now since 1966. Mus ah be right after Selassie mek he visit?

And coming up on Monday... well de whole weekend ga be crazy in NY wit boatrides, backyards, big fetes, breakfast parties and jouvert ... dey have everyting up here! Which should only be reflected by de population as we hear it have more Trini in Brooklyn dan Trinidad!! Is de New York Labor Day and West Indian Parade, which happens to be the largest parade in the entire United States of America. So when you talking that kinda size, you talking some kind money. Managing committees are having issues marketing the parade to televisions as de TV people telling dem that they don't have a product. Dey have to edit out de whole ting cause is only young ouman, half dress getting on vulgar, so by de time they ready to air... is wha? So they passing all kinda talk. First off, no T-shirt band! So who what to enter de parade in a matching jussey... forget dat. Second off and even worst, dey say how if dey catch anybody getting on like dey making love in de streets, well ah officer might pull up yuh socks. Yuh remember how man-kind used to get brace from Long Circular Mall security fuh hugging up dey girl fren by de 3rd floor balcony... well imagine big man getting that brace on de Parkway!! Real jokes yes!! Judgement to collect a baton fuh ah small wine. Well we just waiting to see... people look out!

Talking bout regulating, de news today is de "School Policy on Drug Abuse and Prevention" in Trinidad. In a nutshell a survey of 4,058 students from 58 schools come up with astonishing numbers. Now we ent even know that Trini have so much school!

Now hear some figures... 73% does take a drink; 13.7% does bun some ganja; 37.5% opting for de cancer sticks; 6.7% using inhalants! And de worst is about 100 students try out cocaine, hallucinogens and de ecstasy. Now we doh tink that this is a new ting, since all ah we was in secondary school and we know what does go on... so de best part is de solution. Here what de ministry come up with to start dealing wit de madness (we just list a few)...

"The policy prohibits all tobacco and alcohol advertising such as billboards and signs in sports facilities, at schools or official offices.

The policy places a ban on smoking in all school buildings including classrooms, laboratories, offices, work areas, study areas, reception areas, staff rooms, meeting rooms, restrooms, stair- wells, eating areas, hallways and sports facilities.

Smoking has also been prohibited in all buildings and offices of the Ministry of Education; this also applies to vehicles belonging to the ministry.

Under the policy, alcohol would no longer be sold, promoted or consumed on school compounds, including during school functions, bazaars or frolics."

Imagine yuh cyah smoke in de car, if it have a ministry registration! We ent know how and if it helping, but we want to know who enforcing all ah dat! And imagine how they just nip de fast growing "[substitute school of your choice] Carnival All Inclusive?" Somehow ah feel a special exemption will arise come next year... but lets just wait and see.
